Why managing stress isn’t enough and what your nervous system needs✨

👋 Hi Wellness IQ Crew!

Many of us are carrying more stress than we realize. Between ongoing global uncertainty, nonstop news, economic pressures, and the pace of modern life, there is a level of background tension that many people are living with every day. Even when things are going fine on the surface, our nervous systems often do not get the message.

This week, I want to talk about emotional fitness, a wellness skill that does not get nearly enough attention, yet quietly influences how we think, sleep, digest, connect, and show up in our lives.

Emotional fitness is not about suppressing emotions or forcing yourself to stay positive. It is the ability to notice what you are feeling, regulate your nervous system, and recover from stress without getting stuck in a chronic state of overwhelm.

From a Functional Medicine perspective, this matters because stress is not just emotional. It is physiological. When your nervous system stays on high alert for too long, it affects hormones, inflammation, immune function, digestion, sleep, and even how well supplements work.

It is not about one magic solution. Emotional fitness is built by stacking small, supportive habits that help your body feel safe enough to reset.

Your nervous system has two main modes. One supports action, focus, and protection. The other supports rest, repair, digestion, healing, and connection. Both states are essential. The goal is not to eliminate stress. It is to move fluidly between activation and recovery.

When stress is constant, many people get stuck in alert mode without realizing it. The nervous system does not distinguish between physical danger and emotional or informational overload. It simply responds.

Over time, this can show up as feeling wired but tired, trouble sleeping, digestive issues, irritability, anxiety, low resilience, or simply feeling on edge.

One of the key players here is cortisol, often referred to as the primary stress hormone. Cortisol is meant to be highest in the morning to help us wake up and engage with the day, then gradually fall as the day goes on so we can wind down and sleep at night. When stress is constant, this rhythm can become disrupted, contributing to fatigue, sleep issues, mood changes, and difficulty relaxing. Supporting emotional fitness helps bring cortisol back into a healthier daily pattern.

If stress has been feeling harder to manage lately, this is your reminder that nothing is wrong with you. Your nervous system may simply need more support.

The most powerful nervous system support is often simple and easy to overlook.

🟢 Sleep that restores. Consistent sleep and wake times help regulate stress hormones and signal safety to the nervous system.

🟢 Protein and steady blood sugar. Unstable blood sugar is stressful to the body and the nervous system. Protein at meals helps prevent energy crashes that amplify stress responses. As a general guideline, many adults do well aiming for 20 to 30 grams of protein per meal, though individual needs vary. I recently wrote in more detail about this and about why most people are not getting enough. You can find that article in my LinkedIn Wellness 101 weekly newsletters, or email me and I am happy to send it to you. https://www.linkedin.com/in/gloriatreister/recent-activity/newsletter/or Gloria@WellnessEvolution.com

🟢 Gentle, regular movement. Walking, stretching, or light strength work helps discharge stress hormones and improves nervous system flexibility.

🟢 Intentional pauses. Even a few minutes of slow breathing or quiet awareness can shift the nervous system out of alert mode.

These basics create the foundation. Supplements can support this work, but they do not replace it.

This is not about numbing stress. It is about supporting the biology that helps your nervous system adapt. Here are a few options commonly used in Functional Medicine practice that tend to resonate well with readers.

🟠 Magnesium. Magnesium plays a critical role in calming the nervous system, supporting muscle relaxation, and improving sleep quality. Forms such as magnesium glycinate and magnesium threonate are particularly helpful because they are better absorbed and more effective at supporting the brain and nervous system compared to forms like magnesium oxide or magnesium citrate.

🟠 Omega 3 fatty acids. Omega 3s support brain health, inflammation balance, and emotional regulation. They are an important foundational supplement for most people.

🟠 B vitamins. B vitamins are essential for neurotransmitter production, stress resilience, and energy metabolism. Many people benefit from methylated B vitamins, especially if they have difficulty converting standard forms due to genetics, gut health, or chronic stress. About 40% of all people have this issue.

🟠 Cortisol Calm. Cortisol Calm by Pure Encapsulations is designed to maintain healthy cortisol levels and support relaxation, restful sleep and positive mood during times of occasional stress.

🟠 Ashwagandha. Ashwagandha is an herb known as an adaptogen, a category of botanicals that help the body adapt to stress in a dynamic way. Adaptogens do not push the body in one direction. Instead, they help the nervous system respond more appropriately based on what the body needs at the time.

Many people find ashwagandha supportive for calm focus, emotional steadiness, and resilience during demanding periods.

I have created a simple Emotional Fitness Supplement Plan in my Fullscript dispensary for those who want a guided starting point with high quality options. CLICK HERE to access it. My clients always get a 15-20% discount on everything on that site.

Please remember: supplement quality, sourcing, and timing matter.

One of the most overlooked aspects of emotional fitness is learning how to calm and focus your own energy. Practices like breathwork, meditation, mindfulness, and Reiki all work through a similar pathway by helping the nervous system feel safe.

As a Reiki Master, I want to share something many people do not realize:everyone has Reiki. The word Reiki means guided life force energy, and we all have access to it.

Reiki is not about belief or special ability. It is about learning how to focus attention, slow the nervous system, and intentionally direct calming energy. I teach what is called Practical Reiki, simple techniques anyone can use to create moments of regulation and reset in everyday life. Learn more about it in next week’s article.

Supplements and supportive practices can make a meaningful difference, but they are not a substitute for professional care when stress becomes overwhelming or starts affecting mental health significantly.

If anxiety, depression, or emotional distress feels persistent or unmanageable, reaching out for medical or therapeutic support is a sign of strength, not failure.

Emotional fitness includes knowing when to ask for help.

If things feel overwhelming, you do not have to figure it out alone.

I have a short handout called “Tips to Consider When Things Get Overwhelming” that includes 10 simple reminders and grounding strategies you can use in everyday life. You are welcome to request it by emailing me directly at Gloria@WellnessEvolution.com.
