How key ingredients support skin resilience and healthy aging
📖 Estimated read time: 4 – 5 minutes
👋 Hi Wellness IQ Crew!
Many people spend hundreds, sometimes thousands, of dollars each year on skincare products hoping to slow wrinkles and maintain healthy looking skin. But what many people do not realize is that skin health reflects much more than what we apply to the surface.
Healthy skin is influenced by:
• the nutrients we consume
• the ingredients we apply topically
• the health of our microbiome
• how well we protect our skin from cellular damage
When these systems work together, skin is better able to maintain hydration, elasticity, and resilience as we age. Let’s explore several ingredients and strategies that research suggests can help support healthier, more resilient skin.
🧬 Why Skin Aging Happens
Wrinkles and loss of skin elasticity do not appear overnight. They develop gradually as important structural proteins and protective systems begin to decline. As we discussed last week, one of the most important of these proteins is collagen, the structural framework that helps keep skin firm, smooth, and resilient. Beginning in our twenties, collagen production slowly decreases. Environmental exposures such as UV radiation, pollution, and poor diet can accelerate that process. Over time, skin becomes thinner, less elastic, and more prone to wrinkles. Protecting the systems that support skin structure is therefore one of the most important strategies for maintaining healthy looking skin.
🍊 Antioxidants and Free Radical Damage
One of the biggest drivers of skin aging is something called free radical damage. Free radicals are unstable molecules produced by factors such as UV radiation, pollution, smoking, and poor diet. These molecules damage cells through a process called oxidative stress. Over time, oxidative stress weakens collagen and elastin, the fibers that help keep skin firm and elastic. When these fibers begin to break down, wrinkles, thinning skin, and loss of elasticity begin to appear.
This is why antioxidants such as vitamin C are so important for skin health. Vitamin C helps neutralize free radicals before they damage healthy cells and also plays an important role in supporting collagen production.
Topical vitamin C products are commonly used to support:
• brighter looking skin
• collagen synthesis
• protection from environmental stress
🦠 The Gut-Skin Axis and Wrinkles
One of the most fascinating discoveries in recent years involves the
gut-skin axis, the communication network between the digestive system, immune system, and skin. The health of our gut microbiome influences inflammation throughout the body. When the microbiome is balanced, inflammatory signals are better regulated. And inflammation plays an important role in skin aging and wrinkle formation. Research suggests certain probiotic strains may help support skin health through this pathway.
Some studies have shown probiotics may:
• improve skin hydration and elasticity
• support skin barrier function
• reduce inflammatory acne lesions
• influence the visible depth of wrinkles
In conditions such as psoriasis, probiotics have also been associated with reductions in inflammatory markers such as:
• IL-6 (Interleukin-6, a signaling molecule involved in immune activation)
• TNF-alpha (Tumor Necrosis Factor alpha, a protein that promotes inflammation)
• CRP (C-reactive protein, a blood marker doctors measure to assess inflammation)
Lower levels of these markers may help create a healthier environment for skin. Because probiotic effects are strain specific (different strains for different gains), the type of probiotic matters.
One probiotic I personally use is Seed DS-01, which, among many others, includes a dermatological health blend containing strains such as:
• Bifidobacterium lactis
• Bifidobacterium longum
• Lacticaseibacillus casei
• Ligilactobacillus salivarius
These strains were selected for their potential to support skin clarity, texture, and resilience through the gut-skin axis.
It is a fascinating example of how what happens in the gut can influence how our skin looks and behaves on the outside.
⚡ Cellular Energy and NAD+
Another emerging area of skincare science focuses on cellular energy and repair. A molecule called NAD+ (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide) plays a critical role in how cells generate energy and repair damage. NAD+ helps activate cellular repair pathways that protect tissues from environmental stress and aging. Because NAD+ levels naturally decline as we age, supporting these cellular processes has become an area of growing interest in skin longevity research. Some newer skincare formulations now include ingredients designed to support these NAD-related pathways. I’ve included the one I use in my protocol listed below.
🧴 Ingredients That Support Healthy Skin
Along with internal nutrition, topical ingredients can play an important role in maintaining skin resilience. Many of the products I personally use focus on supporting several key skin functions.
Gentle skin renewal
Resurfacing treatments and exfoliating ingredients help remove dead skin cells and encourage healthy cell turnover. This allows newer, healthier skin cells to emerge.
Microbiome balance
The skin has its own microbiome that helps regulate inflammation, protect against pathogens, and maintain hydration. Some modern skincare products include probiotic or microbiome supporting ingredients to help maintain this balance.
Antioxidant protection
Ingredients such as vitamin C help neutralize oxidative stress from environmental exposures that can damage collagen and skin cells.
Cellular resilience
Products designed to support cellular repair pathways, including those related to NAD+, aim to support healthier skin function at the cellular level.

🔬 Coming Next Week: My Favorite Skin Devices
Ingredients and nutrition form the foundation of healthy skin.
But technology can also help support skin renewal and firmness.
Next week I will share some of the devices I personally use, including microcurrent tools, at-home microneedling, and LED light therapy. If you have ever wondered whether these devices actually work to support skin tone and elasticity, you will want to watch for that article.
✨ Final Thoughts
Healthy skin is rarely the result of one miracle product. It is the result of consistently supporting cellular repair, protecting collagen, and giving your skin the ingredients it needs to thrive.
That includes:
- protecting cells from oxidative damage
- supporting the microbiome
- nourishing the body with the right nutrients
- choosing skincare ingredients that strengthen the skin barrier
- and using technologies that help support skin renewal
When you combine the right nutrients, skincare ingredients, and supportive technologies, you create the conditions for skin that can remain resilient, vibrant, and healthy for years to come.
See you next week, and, as always … Be cool to your future self. 😎
Wishing you wellness 🌺
